چکیده

The recent addition of two radars to the existing network of six Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) HF radars in the Northern Hemisphere has significantly extended the area in the high latitude where measurements of convecting ionospheric plasma are made. We show that the distribution of the electrostatic potential ß associated with the "E x B" drift of ionospheric plasma can be reliably mapped on global scales when velocity measurments provide sufficient coverage. The global convection maps, or the equivalent electrostatic potential maps, are solved using an established technique of fitting velocity data to an expansion of ß in terms of spherical harmonic functions. When the measurements are extensive, and especially when they span the region between the extrema in the potential distribution, the solution for the global pattern becomes insensitive to the choice of statistical model data used to constrain the fitting. That is, the statistical model data then only guide the solution in regions where no measurements are available, and the details of the model data have little effect on the gross features of the largescale convection patterns. The resulting total potential variation across the polar cap, •pc, is virtually independent of the statistical model. The ability to accurately determine •pc and the global potential ß on the basis of direct measurements is an important step in understanding solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.

A dynamical model of high‐latitude convection derived from SuperDARN plasma drift measurements

[1] A discrete set of climatological patterns of high‐latitude ionospheric convection are derived using line‐of‐sight plasma drift data from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN). The patterns are derived independently for the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere and for varying solar wind, interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), and dipole tilt angle conditions. By interpolating...

Comparison of large-scale Birkeland currents determined from Iridium and SuperDARN data

The Birkeland currents, J‖, electrically couple the high latitude ionosphere with the near Earth space environment. Approximating the spatial distribution of the Birkeland currents may be achieved using the divergence of the ionospheric electric field, E⊥, assuming zero conductance gradients such that J‖≈6p∇·E⊥. In this paper, electric field data derived from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Networ...

Variability of F2-layer peak characteristics at low latitude in Argentina for high and low solar activity and comparison with the IRI-2016 model

This work presents the study of the variability of foF2 and hmF2 at a low latitude station in South America (Tucumán, 26.9°S, 294.6°E; magnetic latitude 15.5°S, Argentina). Ground based ionosonde measurements obtained during different seasonal and solar activity conditions (a year of low solar activity, 2009 and one of high solar activity, 2016) are considered in order to compare the ionospheri...

Dawn and dusk sector comparisons of small-scale irregularities, convection, and particle precipitation in the high-latitude ionosphere

[1] Small-scale ionospheric irregularities and auroral precipitation are common features of the auroral ionosphere, but their spatial association has not been examined on global scales. In this paper, we compare electron and ion precipitation from individual passes of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft with concurrent observations of ionospheric irregularities and pl...

Spectral width of SuperDARN echoes: measurement, use and physical interpretation

The Doppler velocity and spectral width are two important parameters derived from coherent scatter radar systems. The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) is capable of monitoring most of the high latitude region where different boundaries of the magnetosphere map to the ionosphere. In the past, the spectral width, calculated from SuperDARN data, has been used to identify the ionosphere...
